LOCKHEED CONSTELLATIONS

The Lockheed Constellation ("Connie") is a propeller-driven, four-engined airliner built by Lockheed Corporation starting in 1943. The Constellation series was the first pressurized-cabin civil airliner series to go into widespread use.

Several different models of the Constellation series were produced, all had the distinctive triple-tail and dolphin-shaped fuselage.
In total, 856 were produced between 1943 and 1958, and used as both a civil airliner and as a military and civilian cargo transport.

Civilian variants were:

L-049 Constellation
(initial variants based on the military version used during WWII)

L-149 Constellation
(modified L-049 in order to carry more fuel tanks)

L-649 Constellation
(new stronger engines; the cabin was redesigned and made more luxurious; a removable "speedpack", i.e. a cargo hold, beneath the belly of the aircraft; increase payload)

L-749 Constellation
(in addition to the L-649: larger fuel capacity, strengthened landing gear, and eventually a weather radar)

L-1049 Super Constellation
(The wings of the new model were strengthened, cabin soundproofing was increased, and the landing gear retraction system was improved. A new series of interior layouts was offered for the new model. New stronger engines).
L-1049C: initial variant
L-1049D: freighter
L-1049E: carried more load than -C.
L-1049G: "super-G", stronger engines, wing-tip fuel tanks to increase the range, optional weather radar)
L-1049H: convertible passenger/cargo version

L-1649 Starliner
(new wing and turbocompound engines)

[53 postcards]

TWA operated in total 149 Constellations.

TWA was by far the largest operator of Lockheed Constellations.

In my listing below the numbers are:
31 Lockheed Constellations L-049 as first user, 1 additional leased
38 Lockheed Constellation L-749/749A as first user, 3 additionasl as second user
42 Lockheed Super Constellations L-1049A/G/H as first user, 5 addional L-1049H were leased
29 Lockheed Starliners L-1649A as first user

IDENTIFICATION DIFFICULTIES
As a collector it's hard to identify the individual aircraft as the registration number is painted in fairly small letters/numbers on the outside of two of the tail fins. Above this number the fleet number is painted as well.
Both these numbers are very difficult to see on a postcard, at least if it's a printed color photo. On real photograph black-white postcards it's obviously easier.

Each aircraft (almost) had also a name. The name was painted on the foreward part of the fuselage (close to the nose). This is also very difficult to see on a postcard. If you are lucky parts of the registration number also is painted on the front wheel hatch (or whatever it is called).

Original user of

Original (first) user of thirty-one (31) Lockheed Constellations L-049
[2/31]

One can of course argue whether TWA should be called "first" user of these aircrafts.
They were all used by US Air Force prior to being re-built and delivered to TWA.
"First civilian user" may be a more appropriate phrase.

Most aircrafts were given "Star of xxx" names, where "xxx" was a city, country, place or something similar.
The alternative naming was "xxx Sky Chief".

The first aircraft to be delivered was c/n 2021 N86500 Star of the Mediterranean
on November 15 1945.

Unidentified Constellations

Here I show postcards where the motive obviously is a Lockheed Constellation,
but I have not yet managed to figure out the airline.

Super Constellation Flyers

Super Constellation Flyers was a group maintaining one of last flying Super Constellations in Basel, Switzerland.
Leased 2004 as N73544. Bought 2007, new registration became HB-RSC.

Not in flight anymore ...
Latest news I have seen is that a move of the aircraft to Germany was initiated 2019. The ambition is to get it back to airworthy condition later on ...

The aircraft is an ex US Air Force Lockheed Constellation C-121C. Built 1955, C/N 4177.
In service with USAF 1955-1972.
