BOEING 377 STRATOCRUISER

This is a website based on my collection of Stratocruiser postcards.
There is a first section for the first users of the 56 aircrafts built (including the prototype). Then follows a second section which shows all postcards presented per airline which used, or intended to use, the Stratocruiser.
Lastly, section three deals with the Guppies, i.e. re-built 377 Stratocruisers.

A number of the Stratocruisers were also rebuilt by Israel Aircraft Industries to comply with Israel Air Force standards, and were the used by Israel AF for several years. Since I completely lack postcards in this area there is no section below for this.

SECTION 1 - ORIGINAL USERS
(29 out of 56 original user registrations are in the collection)

Model 377-10-26 | Model 377-10-28 | Model 377-10-29 | Model 377-10-30

SECTION 2 - AIRLINES

[Source: rzjets.net; Speedbird: The Complete History of BOAC; wikipedia]

The BOAC plane was enroute from London-Heathrow airport, via Manchester and Prestwick, to New York.
Due to bad weather is was decided to skip the first stop in Manchester and fly directly to Prestwick. The departure was delayed as one passenger from Manchester had to go by train to London to catch the flight. The flight was further delayed as a mechanical problem forced the crew to return to London-Heathrow after the first start. They changed the plane to the G-ALSA Cathay. 03:30 in the morning the landing attempt took place in rain. The aircraft landed short of the runway, overturned and caught fire. 28 of the 36 onboard were killed.

Registration is not visible and the Clipper name I just can't read.

I've scrutinized this image several times. The registration is unfortunately hidden behind one of the propellor blades. I can read "N10", so it's one of the original Pan Am planes, a model 10-26. The Clipper name is a single word but I just can't read it.

The postcard is numbered 2/55 so I believe it's published 1955, so the photo is most likely from 1954-1955ish.

SAS - Scandinavian Airlines System
SAS ordered 4 Stratocruisers in February 1946.
But Boeing was facing difficulties to meet both requested delivery date and SAS requirements.
In november 1946 the order was cancelled and transfered to BOAC instead.
PR Postcard

Never flown by SAS!

But still I have a postcard of a Stratocruiser in SAS colors ...

On the back of the postcard it says:
The Boeing Stratocruiser, world's most luxurious airliner, which Scandinavian Airlines will place into service late in 1948. /.../
SAS has on order four of these giant planes.

PR postcard
of deliveries that never took place
Postcard published by:
Boeing Aircraft Company

Facts:
The intension was to buy four Boeing B-377 Stratocruisers. In february 1946 an order have been placed for these four aircrafts. In november the same year the order was cancelled in favour for the DC-6 aircrafts.

The four B-377 aircrafts were after some negociation with Boeing transferred to BOAC.

TAL - Transocean Air Lines
Transocean Air Lines (or TALOA) operated 14 (I have only 13 in my list below) Boeing 377 Stratocruisers between the years 1958 and 1960 (went bankrupt 1960).
How many were flying in real traffic and how many were only used for spares I don't know.
All were bought from BOAC.

Registrations used were:
N106Q, N107Q, N109Q,
N401Q, N402Q (was N137A), N403Q (was N85Q), N404Q (was N86Q), N405Q (was N100Q), N406Q (N101Q), N407Q (was N102Q), N408Q (was N103Q), N409Q, N410Q (was N105Q)

From taloa.org (read June 28 2020)
"Transocean acquired 14 former BOAC Stratocruisers, four of which were put into service over the Atlantic for the summer of 1958. These four were N401 Q, N402Q, N403Q and N404Q. Of these, N404Q operated a New York-Dublin-Gatwick service on 13th June, returning to New York via Shannon the following day. N403Q routed from Prestwick to Shannon on the morning of 31th July 1959. Flights continued until the end of September 1959 with N404Q concluding the programme on 30th September '59 with the operation of a Gatwick-Shannon-New York service. Sadly, the cost of operating then Stratocruisers proved prohibitive and led to the bankruptcy of Transocean in 1960".

21 were delivered directly from Boeing Aircrafts in 1949-1950 (registrations N1022V to N1042V).

West African Airways Corporation
WAAC (West African Airways Corporation) was an airline that operated from 1946 to 1958, jointly owned by the governments of Britain's four west African colonies, Gambia, the Gold Coast (now Ghana), Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The company was dissolved September 30 1958 when the shareholder countries set up their own national airlines. The exception was Nigeria who continued WAAC with the amendment of Nigeria to the name.

If WAAC ever flew a Stratocruiser in commercial service is still unknown to me. I have seen a picture on English Wikipedia showing G-APKI in WAAC markings if that means something ...

The registration of the Stratocruiser is G-BOAC which obviously is a fake registration.

This is a typical PR postcard.
