Darwin

Darwin International Airport
[DRW/YPDN]

Darwin International Airport is the busiest airport serving the Northern Territory and the tenth busiest airport in Australia. It is the only airport serving Darwin. The airport is located in Darwin's northern suburbs, 8 km from Darwin city centre, in the suburb of Eaton. It shares runways with the Royal Australian Air Force's RAAF Base Darwin.

Essendon Airport (aka Essendon Fields Airport)
[MEB/YMEN]

Essendon airport is the closest to Melbourne's City Centre, approximately a 13 km drive north-west from it and 8 km south-east from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. In 1970, Tullamarine Airport replaced Essendon as Melbourne's main airport.

Originally the airport had grass runways with the first tenants moving in from December 1921.
The grass was upgraded to concrete tarmac in 1946.

Essendon became Australia's second, and Melbourne's first, international airport in February 1950. The airport was renamed Melbourne Airport, and the first international commercial flight arrived from New Zealand a year later. In the 1950s Essendon Airport was too small for the larger pure jets, such as the Boeing 707. The airport was surrounded by housing and expansion was impossible.

Commercial international flights were transferred to the new airport Tullamarine in 1970, with commercial domestic flights following the next year.
