Berlin

Berlin-Tegel
[TXL/EDDT]

Berlin-Tegel was built 1948 during the Berlin blockade. Berlin-Tempelhof could not accomodate all air traffic.
The construction of the (at that time) longest runway took only 90 days, and already in November 1948 the first plane could land.
After the airlift 1948-1949, Tegel was used as an airport for the French Air Force.

At the end of the 1950's Tempelhof's runways were too short to cope with the new larger jet aircrafts.
1960 Air France was the first airline that started commercial operations from Tegel.
1964 Air France was followed by Pan Am that introduced direct flights to New York with Boeing 707 or DC-8 aircrafts which both required longer runways than Tempelhof had.

In September 1975 Tegel replaced Tempelhof as Berlin's main airport.

In 1988, Berlin Tegel was named after German aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal.

Berlin-Tempelhof
[THF/EDDI]

Berlin Tempelhof Airport was one of the first airports in Berlin.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Reich Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began a massive reconstruction in the mid-1930s.

After the WWII American Overseas Airlines (AOA), at the time the overseas division of American Airlines, inaugurated the first commercial air link serving Tempelhof after the war with a flight from New York via Shannon, Amsterdam and Frankfurt on 18 May 1946.
Pan Am aquired AOA 1959 and established a presence at Tempelhof that lasted until 1975 when Pan Am moved to the Tegel airport.
Other airlines that had a strong presence at Tempelhof wer Air France and BEA British European Airways.

Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008.

Bremen

Bremen airport
[BRE/EDDW]

The Bremer Verein für Luftschiffahrt, a local aerospace club, conducted the first experimental flights at the present site in the summer of 1910.
Official permission for the opening of an airport was granted on 16 May 1913.

After WWI, the airport reopened on 18 July 1920, with Dutch airline KLM beginning scheduled flights to Amsterdam soon thereafter.
After WWII the US troops used Bremen airport as an airfield for military transports.
Control was handed back to the Bremen authorities in 1949. Civilian operations resumed that year with Scandinavian Airlines using Bremen Airport as a stopover on routes from Scandinavia to Geneva and Vienna.

In the mid-1950s, the terminal buildings were reconstructed and Lufthansa began scheduled flights to the airport.
The German airline also established its pilot training operations (Lufthansa Flight Training) at the airport.
During the 1960s, scheduled jet flights began to be operated at Bremen.

Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf-Lohausen airport
[DUS/EDDL]

The present airport was opened on 19 April 1927, after two years of construction.
Deutsche Luft Hansa opened routes to Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Geneva.

After the end of the war the airport reopened for civil use in 1948. With the area under British administration, the first flights were operated by British European Airways to RAF Northolt.
In 1950, the main runway was extended to 2475 metres.
In 1964 planning began for the construction of a new terminal, with capacity for 1.4 million passengers, and in 1969 the main runway was further lengthened to 3000 metres. In 1992 the new second runway was built.

Frankfurt am Main airport or Rhein-Main airport
[FRA/EDDF]

Frankfurt am Main Airport, also known as Rhein-Main-Flughafen, is a major international airport located in Frankfurt.
Frankfurt Airport lies 12 km southwest of central Frankfurt.
Frankfurt Airport is the busiest airport by passenger traffic in Germany as well as the 4th busiest in Europe.

The southern side of the airport ground was home to the Rhein-Main Air Base, which was a major air base for the United States from 1947 until 2005, when the air base was closed and the property was acquired by Fraport (now occupied by Terminal 3).

The official opening of the new Flug- und Luftschiffhafen Rhein-Main took place on 8 July 1936.
The first plane that landed was a Ju 52/3m, Six days later, on 14 July 1936 LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin landed at the airport.

After the WWII in 1951, restrictions for German air travellers were lifted and civil air traffic started to grow again. In 1952, Frankfurt Airport handled more than 400,000 passengers; a year later it was more than half a million. About 100 to 120 aeroplanes took off from and landed in Frankfurt daily. In 1955, Lufthansa resumed flights to and from Frankfurt and in the same year the Federal Republic of Germany gained its air sovereignty back from the Allies. In 1957, the northern runway was extended, first to 3,000 m and then to 3,900 m , to make it compatible with jet aircraft.

The three postcards below I think is taken the same day with only minutes apart.
The first postcard shows a Pan Am DC-4 N90906 parked on the tarmac and a Pan Am DC-7 approaching.
The second postcard shows both the Pan Am DC-6 and DC-7 parked on the tarmac, while the KLM CV-340 is taxiing towards its place.
The third and final postcards shows all three aicrafts mentioned earlier parked on the tarmac. Two other aircrfats have joined, first a Pan Am DC-4 or DC-6 (hard to tell) and then a Pan Am Boeing B377 Stratocruiser.
On all three postcards Hans Hartz is mentioned as the photographer.
The postcard to the right has G. D. in Frankfurt mentioned as the publisher.
It's most likely produced by Hans Andres Verlag as their logo is found on this postcard.

As the registration is NC90925 it must be an AOA registered aircraft and not Pan Am. Suffices after the "N" was used up to 1948. "C" stands for Commercial.

Pan Am took over the Connie as the companies merged 1950.

Hamburg

Hamburg-Fühlsbüttel airport (Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt)
[HAM/EDDH]

Hamburg Airport, is a major international airport in Hamburg. Since November 2016 the official name has become Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt, after the former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt. It is located 8.5 km north of the city centre in the Fuhlsbüttel quarter.

The airport was opened in January 1911 from private funding by the Hamburger Luftschiffhallen GmbH (HLG), making it the oldest international airport in the world to still be in operation and the second oldest airport in the country after Tempelhof Airport.

During the British occupation, beginning in 1945, the airport was given its current name, Hamburg Airport. It was used extensively during the Berlin Airlift in 1948 as a staging area, as the northern air corridor went between Hamburg and West Berlin.

When Lufthansa launched passenger operations in 1955, Hamburg was used as a hub until Frankfurt Airport took over due to growth constraints posed by the location in the city. Lufthansa Technik still maintains a large presence at the airport
due to the early activities of the airline at the airport.

Hannover-Langenhagen airport
[HAJ/EDDV]

Hannover Airport is the international airport of Hannover. The ninth largest airport in Germany, it is in Langenhagen, 11 km north of Hannover.

Hannover Airport was opened in Langenhagen in 1952, replacing an old airfield within the city limits of Hannover. In 1973 two modern terminals were opened, which became famous because of their compact design. They became the archetype for the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. These terminals A and B are still in service.

München (Munich)

München (Munich) - Riem airport
[MUC/EDDM]

Munich-Riem Airport was the international airport of Munich. It was closed down on 16 May 1992, the day before the new Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport commenced operations. It was located near the old village of Riem in the borough of Trudering-Riem in the east of Munich.

Construction started in 1936. The first plane landed on 25 October 1939, signalling the beginning of air traffic. At this time it was one of the most modern airports in the world. It replaced the airfield at Oberwiesenfeld (now the site of the Olympic Village).

After the war Munich-Riem was the first airport in Germany to be used for civil aviation.
Post-war operations started on 6 April 1948 with the landing of a DC-3 operated by Pan American World Airways.

On 29 October 1958, the first jet aircraft, a Sud Aviation Caravelle operated by Air France, landed on the runway that had been lengthened to 2600 metres.

Due to increased traffic and consequently increased passengers numbers search for a new airport location begun. Due to this "overload" and difficulty to expand the move to a new airport location was inevitable.

stands for
Arthur F. Krüger, Hamburg

1950 was the old (founded 1909) Krüger company sold to the two brothers Gottfried and Hans Ebert. They introduced a modern offset printing making Krüger a VERY competitive company. During a period Krüger was the biggest postcard manufacturer in Germany.

I gues A. F. K. H. is a logo used for early 1950ies postcards, while just "Krüger" is printed on most of the cards during the 1960ies and 1970ies.

Nuremberg airport (Albrech Dürer Flughafen Nürnberg)
[NUE/EDDN]

Nuremberg Airport (Albrecht Dürer Flughafen Nürnberg), is the international airport of the Franconian metropolitan area of Nuremberg and the second-busiest airport in Bavaria after Munich Airport.

Nuremberg Airport was the first airport constructed in Germany after World War II. It was inaugurated on 6 April 1955.

In 1968 the runway was extended to its present length of 2,700 metres, allowing jumbo jets to use it.
The apron was enlarged in 1977 and in 1981 a new passenger terminal with an observation deck and a restaurant replaced the previous building.
In December 1986, the one million passenger mark was passed for the first time.

Stuttgart-Echterdingen airport (Stuttgart Airport)
[STR/EDDS]

Stuttgart Airport is the international airport of Stuttgart, the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is christened in honor of Stuttgart's former mayor, Manfred Rommel, and is the sixth busiest airport in Germany.
The airport is located approximately 13 km south of Stuttgart.

The airport was built in 1939 to replace Böblingen Airport.
In 1945, the United States Army took over the airport until returning it to German authorities in 1948.
For the duration of the Cold War the runway and facilities were shared with the United States Army.

The airport was expanded after World War II.
The runway was extended to 1,800 m in 1948, then to 2,250 m in 1961 and finally to 3,345 m in 1996.
