Catania

Catania-Fontanarossa airport
[CTA/LICC]

Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, in Italian Aeroporto Internazionale Vincenzo Bellini di Catania-Fontanarossa,
is an international airport located southwest of Catania.

The airport opened in 1950 since the old Catania airport was too small to handle the growth in air traffic and the demands from larger aircrafts.
It has gradually been built out to cope with increasing demands.

Milano-Malpensa Airport
[MXP/LIMC]

Milan Malpensa Airport is the largest international airport in the Milan metropolitan area in northern Italy.

Malpensa Airport officially commenced commercial operations on 21 November 1948 as Aeroporto Città di Busto Arsizio, although the Belgian national flag-carrier Sabena had started flying to Brussels from here a year earlier. On 2 February 1950 Trans World Airlines (TWA) became the first company to fly long-haul flights from Malpensa, using Lockheed Constellations on their services to New York Idlewild Airport.

A change of ownership occurred in 1952 when the Municipality of Milan took control of the airport's operator, the Società Aeroporto di Busto Arsizio. The operator's name was subsequently changed to Società Esercizi Aeroportuali SpA (SEA). After assuming full control, SEA decided to develop Malpensa as an international and intercontinental gateway, whereas Milan's other airport, Linate Airport, would be tasked with handling only domestic services.

Milano-Linate Airport or Airport Enrico Forlanini
[LIN/LIML]

Milan Linate Airport is the third international airport of Milan, behind Malpensa Airport and Orio al Serio Airport.

The airport was built next to Idroscalo of Milan in the 1930s when Taliedo Airport, one of the world's first aerodromes and airports, became too small for commercial traffic. Linate was completely rebuilt in the 1950s and again in the 1980s.

Since 2001, because of Linate's close proximity to the centre of Milan – only 7 km east of the city centre, compared with Malpensa, which is 41 km northwest of the city centre – its capacity has been reduced by law from 32 slots per hour (technical capacity) down to 22 slots per hour (politically decided capacity) and only domestic or international flights within the EU have been allowed.

Rome-Ciampino International Airport "G. B. Pastine"
[CIA/LIRA]

Rome—Ciampino International Airport "G. B. Pastine", is the secondary international airport of Rome, the capital of Italy, after Rome-Fiumicino Airport "Leonardo da Vinci".

It is a joint civilian, commercial and military airport situated south southeast of central Rome, just outside the Greater Ring Road the circular motorway around the city.

It was Rome's main airport until 1960. After the opening of Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino handled almost exclusively charter and executive flights for more than three decades. However, the terminal facilities were extended at the beginning of 2007 to accommodate the growing number of low-cost carrier operations.

The photos for this postcard must have been taken latest 1957. The first reason is that 1957 LAI became Alitalia. The second reason is that TAE was sold to Aristotle Onassis in 1956, becoming Olympic Airways 1957!

Rome-Fiumucino International Airport "Leonardo da Vinci"
[FCO/LIRF]

The airport was officially opened on 15 January 1961, with two runways, replacing the smaller Rome Ciampino Airport,
which remains in service for some low-cost airlines as well as domestic and charter operations.

Despite being officially opened in 1961, Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport had actually been in use since 20 August 1960.
This was to help relieve air traffic that was congesting Rome Ciampino Airport during the 1960 Summer Olympics.

During the 1960s, home-carrier Alitalia invested heavily in the new airport,
building hangars and maintenance centres; in the same period a third runway was added (16L/34R).
