Douglas DC-8

FIRST DC-8 USERS (original users of a specific c/n) - 608 built
United (105), Alitalia (26), Pan Am (19), Swissair (11), Panagra (5), Finnair (3)

Douglas DC-8 were built in quite a lot of different series.
Gradually stronger engines and better fuel effiency were introduced, and of course other improvements. To read more, check Wikipedia.

Series 10: 30 aircrafts were produced. 23 for for United Airlines, 6 for Delta Airlines and one prototype. All surviving aircrafts were upgraded.
Series 20: 33 aircrafts were built. Originally called DC-8B, but changed when serie 30 was introduced.
Came with stronger and more efficient engines, thus increasing the payload.
Series 30: 57 aircrafts were built. Three different variants existed, 31/32/33.
For intercontinental routes. Slightly improved engines, ability to carry more fuel, strengthened fuselage and landing gear.
Series 40: 32 aircrafts built. Very much as series 30, but with new Rolls-Royce turbo-fan engines for better efficiency, less noise and less smoke.
Series 50: 142 aircrafts were built. Three different variants existed also for this series, 51/52/53. The difference being the weight.
DC-8 Jet Trader: 62 aircrafts built. Douglas built two variants of freighters, the DC-8-54F and DC-8-55F. The 55 had slightly higher take-off weight. Both were convertibles, meaning that they combined both cargo and passengers.
Super DC-8 series 61: 78 aircrafts were built. Built for high capacity and medium range.
Super DC-8 series 62: 51 aircrafts were built, also 10 convertible freighters (62CF) and 6 all freighters (62AF).
Series 62 was built for long range use.
Super DC-8 series 63: 41 aircrafts were built, also 53 convertible freighters (63CF), 7 all freighters (63AF) and 6 aircrafts with the strengthened floor of the freighters but without cargo door (63PF). Series 63 had the long fuselage of the -61, the aerodynamic refinements and increased fuel capacity of the -62 and improved engines.
Super series 70: Only straight conversions for the -61/62/63 variants. Including better engines, new nacelles and pylons.
