SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEM

This is the entry page to my SAS collection, primarily POSTCARDS!

***

SAS (or OSAS - Overseas SAS) was founded 31 of July 1946.
The agreement between the three participating companies ABA (AB Aerotransport - Sweden), DDL (Det Danske Luftfartselskab - Denmark) och DNL (Det Norske Luftfartselskap - Norway) regulated ONLY the inter-continental traffic SAS was about to commence. All three companies still maintained traffic within respective country as well as within Europe.

In april 1948 the three companies agreed to also coordinate the European traffic. The agreement was called ESAS (European SAS) and implied that aircrafts from the three companies were repainted and given the SAS "dragon" look as well as viking names.

In February 1951 ABA, DDL and DNS ceased to exist as airline companies. According to this new agreement all air traffic handled by ABA, DDL and DNL, i.e. the domestic within respective country, the European through ESAS and the Inter-continental through OSAS, in the future be handled by one company, SAS.

The SAS Fleet

Please note that I as starting year for my SAS presentations below use 1948!
It means that some SAS aircrafts are presented also on ABA/DDL/DNL/SILA webpages as they have flown under their liveries.

7 aircrafts were flown by SILA/SAS.
(1944)-1948
Boeing B-17
No other postcards in my collection
Re-built (by SAAB) Flying Fortress bombers from WWII used in the early days
(before DC-4) for transcontinental flights between Europe and USA.

48 aircrafts were flown by SAS.

(1946)-1948-19xx
Douglas DC-3
My SAS DC-3 postcards

3 of the DC-3 aircrafts were bought by ABA in 1937 and were later transfered to SAS.

The majority (42) of the DC-3s were re-built military aircrafts, either the C-47 or C-53 version.

Lastly, 3 aircrafts were version DC-3D, i.e. civilian versions built in 1946.

10 aircrafts were flown by SAS.
(1946)-1948-1956
Douglas DC-4

Already in the autumn of 1943 SILA signed an order of 7 (extended to 10) aircrafts (civilian version) to be delivered when the war was over.

In 1946 the ordered airplanes started to be delivered.

DC-4 was the SAS flagship for only two years until 1948 when the first DC-6 aircrafts were delvered.

DC-4 was lacking a pressurized cabin which made the aircraft unsuitable for climbing over high mountains such as the Alps.

2 aircrafts were flown (?) by SAS.
(1947)-1948-1956
Junker JU-52
No other postcards in my collection

The two known Junker aircrafts flew for DNL. Both were taken by the Germans during WWII, but were later taken up again by DNL.

Both planes were also painted in SAS colors but were never given any Viking names.

Used by DNL after the war on the coastal route Trondheim-Tromsö-Kirkenes up until 1956.

2 aircrafts were flown by SAS.
(1947)-1948-1955
Short Sandringham Mk VI
My SAS Short Sandringham postcards

According to my sources only 2 flying boats were used in SAS colors.

I have 2 more postcards of flying boats in DNL livery with different registrations than the two SAS ones.

The reason why these have not been taken up by SAS is that they crashed before 1948!

13 DC-6 aircrafts were flown by SAS.
14 DC-6B aircrafts were flown by SAS.
1948-1960
Douglas DC-6 and DC-6B

From its delivery 1948 it became SAS new flagship.

The Cloudmaster (DC-6) was used on the transatlantic route (Scandinavia-Prestwich-Gander-New York) up until the DC-6B became available.

With the DC-6Bs SAS started to fly the Polar Route. The historic date for the first commercial flight over the pole was November 15 1954.

8 aircrafts were flown by SAS.
1950-1958
Saab 90A-2 Scandia

The Saab Scandia aircrafts were primarily used on short-haul flights in the Nordic network, but also on some European destinations.

Bought by ABA. Flown by ABA and DNL crews, but never by DDL.

18 DC-7 aircrafts were flown by SAS.
1956-1967
Douglas DC-7

The first 8 DC-7 aircrafts were delvered during 1956. Already a month after the first delivery the DC-7 was taken into service on the North American route.

Another important step in the commercial aviation history was taken on February 24 1957 when SAS made the first flight of the Trans Polar Route, i.e. Copenhagen-Anchorage-Tokyo.

During 1960 the DC-7 gradually lost its primary place in the SAS fleet as the long distance Jet Age arrived with the DC-8 aircrafts.

20 Metropolitan aircrafts were flown by SAS.
1956-1975
Convair CV-440 Metropolitan

In service for almost 20 years.

Until the Caravelle arrived used extensively in the European network replacing the DC-3 aircrafts. Later primarily used for the inter Scandinavian as well as the domestic routes.

21 Caravelle aircrafts were flown by SAS.
1959-1974
Sud-Aviation SE-210 Caravelle III

The first jet aircraft in SAS service. SAS was (together with Iberia) the next biggest user of this aircraft after Air France. Worth noting is that the last three aircrafts were leased from SUD Aviation.

Used primarily for the European network and later on inter Scandinavian and domestic routes.

Never flown by SAS!

But still I have a postcard of a Stratocruiser in SAS colors ...

On the back of the postcard it says:
The Boeing Stratocruiser, world's most luxurious airliner, which Scandinavian Airlines will place into service late in 1948. /.../
SAS has on order four of these giant planes.

What about the
Boeing Stratocruiser?
No other SAS postcard in my collection

My other Boeing B377 Stratocruiser postcards

Facts:
The intension was to buy four Boeing B-377 Stratocruisers. In february 1946 an order have been placed for these four aircrafts. In november the same year the order was cancelled in favour for the DC-6 aircrafts.

The four B-377 aircrafts were after some negociation with Boeing transferred to BOAC.

Other aircraft types in the fleet were (is):

BAC aircrafts

SAS leased 1 BAC One-Eleven aircraft between August 6, 1967 and March 20, 1968
from British Eagle International. The reason for the lease was that SAS was lackaing capacity, and the lease could temporarily fill a gap while SAS was waiting for the first DC-9s.

It was primarily used on the route Copenhagen-Zurich.

In the springtime of 1996 SAS Cargo established a new cargo route from Gothenburg to New York, and also to Macau and Tokyo.
SAS entered an agreement (1996-1999) with Atlas Air to lease Boeng 747 aircrafts for these cargo routes. N640FE was used only for one trip (a FedEx aircraft leased by Atlas Air to SAS). In April 1996 a new leased aircraft N517MC was used, but only until early 1997.
